Dark Circles

This is a topic of great interest to people of all ages. Dark circles aren't just a quality; they're something so small that they can produce significant changes in how we perceive ourselves, but also in how we are seen. We often associate them with tiredness, sadness, or difficulties in life. Dark circles rob our eyes of their expression.

We must differentiate between the dark circles of youth and the dark circles that come with age-related changes.

The skin of the lower eyelid is the thinnest in the entire body and is immediately attached to the orbicularis oculi muscle, the muscle that allows us to close our eyes. As we know and have seen, these muscles are a dark red color. This is why we sometimes have that dark spot under the eyes, which we call dark circles, because our eyelid skin reveals the underlying muscle. The best treatment for this condition is the application of a product derived from our body called nanofat. Nanofat is a preparation of our own fat from which we extract regenerative cells (which is why it's sometimes so difficult to fight that fat!). These regenerative cells help increase the thickness and quality of the eyelid skin, and therefore the underlying muscle is no longer as translucent. This regenerative effect is observed from approximately six months of age and lasts for years. However, it should be noted that the skin of the eyelid will have a yellowish tint, reminiscent of olive oil, for a few months.

Other times, dark circles are due to the laxity of certain tissues under the eyes, causing the fatty bags under the eyes to bulge through the lower eyelids. This occurs due to a weakening of some of the ligaments surrounding the eyes and appears as a bulge that separates from the cheek (causing a dark area beneath the bulge). These changes are common with age, although they can rarely occur in younger people due to genetic variations. In these cases, there are several strategies: from minimally invasive procedures, meaning they require immediate recovery, to invasive procedures such as surgery, which require a recovery time of several days. Among minimally invasive procedures, we can use either hyaluronic acid or body fat to counteract this sagging and camouflage this bulge by concealing this demarcation with the cheek. With surgery, we not only reduce these fatty bags but also camouflage this demarcation with the cheek. In surgery, by being able to address the situation with two different strategies simultaneously, we achieve a better result.
