Dark circles under the eyes

This is a topic of great interest to people of all ages. Dark circles under the eyes are generally not a pleasant feature. They correspond to something so small that can produce significant changes in how we perceive ourselves but also in how we are perceived. Many times we associate them with tiredness, sadness or difficulties in life. Dark circles under the eyes rob our eyes of their expression.

We must differentiate the dark circles of youth from the dark circles that come with the changes of age.

The skin of the lower eyelid is the thinnest skin of the whole body and is immediately attached to the orbicularis oculi muscle which is the muscle that allows us to close our eyes. As we know and as we have seen, the muscles are a dark red color. So sometimes we have that dark spot under our eyes, which we call the dark circles, because our eyelid skin is translucent over the muscle underneath. The best treatment for this situation is the placement of a product derived from our body called nanofat. The nanofat corresponds to a preparation of our fat in which we extract the regenerative cells (that is why it is so difficult sometimes to fight fatty tissue!). These regenerative cells help to increase the thickness and quality of the eyelid skin and therefore the underlying muscle does not show through as much. This regenerative effect is observed after about the sixth month and lasts over the years. However, it must be taken into account that the eyelid skin will have a yellowish tint like olive oil for a few months.

Other times dark circles under the eyes are due to the laxity of the tissues that cause the lower eyelid fatty bags to bulge. This happens because of a weakening of certain ligaments that surround the eyes and presents as a bulge that is demarcated from the cheek (causing a dark area under the bulge). These changes are common with age although on rare occasions they may be present in youth due to genetic variations. In these cases there are several strategies: from minimally invasive procedures with immediate recovery to invasive procedures such as surgery with a recovery of several days. Among the minimally invasive procedures we can use either hyaluronic acid or fat from our body to counteract this fall and camouflage this bulge by disguising this demarcation that exists with the cheek. While with surgery we not only reduce these fat pockets but also camouflage this demarcation with the cheek. In surgery, by being able to address the situation with two different strategies simultaneously, we achieve a better result.
